‘Falling Inn Love
2 out of 5 Lopers

When I opened up my Netflix account this past week, the first thing that I saw was the photo advertising the newest Netflix Original: “Falling Inn Love”. Immediately, from the name, I knew exactly what to expect. I knew that I’d be watching a movie about two people brought together by chance that after struggling would realize that they were meant to be together. I’m not trying to spoil anything, but I’ll just say that this movie did not exceed my expectations in any way. There were a few plot lines that caught me off guard, but overall, “Falling Inn Love” is one of your run-of-the-mill cheesy romantic comedies. Although I’m usually a sucker for these kinds of movies, this one left me disappointed by the lead up and ending of the story.

The first scene of the movie had a rough start. The main character, Gabriela, quits her job because she won an inn, yet the inn is in New Zealand. Had I gotten this prize, I would’ve immediately assumed it was a scam and gone along with the rest of my day. But what did she do? Yes, she decided to uproot her life, leave everything and go to New Zealand for an inn that, surprise surprise, was a scam. Crazy, right?

She definitely didn’t have the easiest start upon her arrival. Still, Gabriela makes the most of her day. While walking miles from the bus stop, her suitcase falls down a hill and runs into, expectedly, the car of a very attractive man. As the movie continues and Gabriela meets both her new gay best friends and a woman who is out to get her, she repeatedly runs into this same attractive man she met in the street. Although this guy actually seems like a genuine person, Gabriela has a sour attitude towards him and gets upset every time they meet. The plot encircles the process that Gabriela goes through as she tries to make this run down inn into a place that a buyer would want.

My criticism stems from the fact that the writers didn’t do a very good job at building up the obvious romance that the movie focused on. Gabriela shifted her feelings from disgust and annoyance straight into having romantic feelings for him. She was denying the fact that she felt felt something for him, and once it shifted, their romance scenes were underwhelming. I like the fact that they spent the time getting to know each other by fixing the inn together, but I would’ve liked a better build up to them falling in love. After they were together for a short amount of time, their relationship gets ruined quite quickly. As romantic movie typically go, something splits them up, but resolves eventually. I won’t say whether or not that happened, but I will say that I wasn’t surprised as to how it ended.

Although “Falling Inn Love” wasn’t the worst romantic movie I’ve seen, I was a little let down. There were a lot of things that could’ve been improved to make it more enjoyable. I think in the end, though, you may still enjoy the movie if you love cheesy romantic films.
