Academic and Career Services brings jobs to students in the Health and Sports Center

By JOSE PEREZ

Once again, the Career and Graduate School Fair took place this past week at UNK. This public event is open to all UNK Students, giving everyone an insight into what their future can hold. Various businesses that table at this event inform UNK students of future job opportunities available during or after someone’s undergraduate career. For many students, this was the first time they have attended this popular event without prior experience.

Jose Arredondo, a first-year UNK Student from Lexington majoring in English Education 7-12 and minoring in Professional Communication and Film Students, made the choice to attend the UNK Career and Graduate School Fair for a variety of reasons. “Like some students, I had to attend the Career and Graduate School Fair for one of my classes this semester. Attending this UNK event was part of my assignment to talk to three different businesses at the event,” Arredondo said. “Aside from that, I really wanted to prepare early for my future. I’ve been told by many people around me that attending the Career and Graduate School fair is one the best ways to plan out your journey if you are struggling about the type of career with you want after you graduate from UNK.”

Most professors will advise students different ways on how to prepare for the Career and Graduate School Fair. Regardless of gender, every student that plans to attend needs to dress up in business professional attire. In addition, students must have several copies of their resume that they plan to give to the different businesses that will table at the Health and Sports Center.

Talking to even just one business can give any UNK student an idea of the different jobs they can have with the degrees they plan to graduate with.

“It was a bit intimidating approaching the people that were tabling at the event. Luckily, most of them were very approachable with me once we introduced ourselves,” Arredondo said. “Connecting with these new people really gave me the ambition to learn about their businesses and how they can benefit

me. Talking to even just one business can give any UNK Student an idea of the different jobs they can have with the degrees they plan to graduate with. I learned about jobs I can apply to that I had no prior knowledge of.”

Once students step outside their comfort zone and attend this event, there can be many special moments that are created when speaking with different businesses. “I had so many highlights from my first Career and Graduate Fair. I had no idea that I would be receiving so many free items!” Arredondo hysterically said. “I also enjoyed learning about many companies that I never knew existed before the event. It honestly made me consider adding a new major while I’m still in school. It was a relief knowing that the career fair gives all students an idea of where they can work at and at the same time still be close to home.”

Regardless of what someone is studying or the grade level they’re in, the Career and Graduate Fair is a UNK event all students should take advantage of. Even with a future planned out, it’s always a good idea to look at other options in case something happens along the way. “Now that I have experience in this UNK event, I now know the impact it can have on other students. This event helps put UNK Students at ease,” Arredondo said. “The event helps students be aware of the many resources they have in the future. Even if you have attended the Career and Graduate Fair before, you need to attend it more than once. That way everyone is aware of even more opportunities that can be provided to them.”
