After cleanup of water pipe leakage that left rooms of URN Pod B damaged, sorority is finally able to return to its normal routine

As UNK staff finished up fixing the leaking pipe issues that drew a small controversy in the early fall semester of 2018, the members of Alpha Xi Delta (AXiD) were able to move back into University Residence North (URN) the first week of this spring semester.

There were issues with the leaking water pipe system that led to water damage that seared into walls and floor of the first floor in URN Pod B. AXiD members were asked to leave their residence until the situation was fixed.

“The girls were split up between Pi Kappa Alpha and Phi Delta Theta,” said Beth Revelo, a senior in Elementary Education and an AXiD member. “We also had the option to move into a different dorm or off-campus but nobody to my knowledge took that option.”

As problems in the AXiD house occurred, both members of Phi Delta Theta and Pi Kappa Alpha welcomed the women into their houses. Revelo said that the women of AXiD enjoyed their time living in the fraternity houses. “I loved my time spent living with the Phi Delts,”  Revelo said. “Everything went smoothly living with them and the only time we couldn’t be on first floor is if there were ritual meetings once a week. It was a great time.”

Phi Delta Theta member, Dylan Dykes, a Freshman History Education Major, liked having AXiD members living on the third floor. “We all enjoyed having them here,” Dykes said.  “Everything went smoothly and there were actually more people in the main lounge hanging out, watching movies, and talking. Everyone got along almost from the start, so it was really nice having them here, plus it’s just a little bit messier now too since they’re gone.”

Dykes said that living with AXiD members had many positive outcomes. “I have mixed feelings over the girls leaving,” Dykes said. “It was great having them here because it was much different having co-ed Greek life happening. You just get that feeling that something is missing but at the same time it will go back to the way it was which is perfectly fine too.”

Although major problems have been solved, AXiD members have noticed some issues that remain in their house. “There were still a couple problems on the first-floor bathroom, but we should be in the clear now,” Revelo said. “I think UNK did, at best, an okay job fixing everything up in a timely manner, but we weren’t supposed to be using the ‘fixed’ first floor bathroom until the end of January. We shall see if everything works again hopefully.”
