Released in late March, Netflix’s original film “The Life List” — based on the novel by Lori Nelson Spielman and starring Sofia Carson, Kyle Allen and Connie Britton — is more than just a classic, cheesy romantic comedy. Beyond the love story, it explores themes of self-discovery, personal growth and the complexities of family bonds.
Set in New York City, “The Life List” follows Alex Rose, portrayed by Carson. Alex lives a comfortable life working as the marketing director for her mother’s beauty company until her world is turned upside down when her mother dies from a terminal illness. Out of her three siblings, Alex shared the closest bond with her mother.
Britton plays Elizabeth Rose, whose final wish is to help her daughter rediscover herself and find true happiness. To do so, she gives Alex a year to complete the “life list” she wrote when she was 13. The list includes goals such as “Make peace, not war, with dad,” “Be a great teacher” and “Find true love.”
For each task Alex completes, she’s given a CD her mother recorded before her death. If she finishes the entire list by the end of the year, she will receive her inheritance.
Allen portrays Brad Ackerman, the lawyer and executor of Elizabeth’s estate. As Alex checks off items on the list, she and Brad grow closer. Over time, their friendship slowly blossoms into something more.
By the end of the film, Alex experiences a transformative year filled with self-exploration and personal growth. She redefines her relationships, reconnects with her passion and learns to appreciate the little things in life.
“The Life List” takes viewers on a touching journey that’s sure to tug on a few heartstrings. I may have shed a tear or two.
The film is emotional without being overdone, and there’s a relatable charm in Alex’s journey to find herself again. As someone who is very close to my own family, I appreciated the recurring theme of familial connection. Although Elizabeth appears primarily through prerecorded videos, the strength of their bond remains evident throughout the film.
With its scenic New York City backdrop, strong cast and heartwarming story, the film is an enjoyable watch. I’m also certain there’s a lesson or two viewers can take away. “The Life List” is a must-watch for anyone in the mood to wind down with a feel-good, emotional story.
