Brewed Awakening in West Center is now offering new lemonades year-round. I was able to try all the flavors with student manager Becca Koch.
Brewed Awakening decided to launch a line of lemonades after hearing many requests for a non-caffeinated drink option. Professor Travis Hollman’s Small Business Management class works closely with Brewed Awakening and brought the idea to life, creating some of the flavors, setting the prices and helping to make the recipes. Each barista at Brewed Awakening also created a flavor combination.
The unflavored lemonade is made in batches and poured from a pitcher when ordered. It is a mix of Country Time lemonade powder, powdered sugar and water. To make the flavored lemonade, the barista adds ice, flavoring and sometimes cold foam, depending on the recipe. The lemonades come in small or large sizes.
The brand of flavors used is Da Vinci. The flavor combinations offered include:
- Strawberry Spark: strawberry
- Loperade: blueberry
- Midnight Cherry: half cherry, half vanilla
- Paradise Punch: half peach, half coconut
- Sunset Blush: half red raspberry, half peach
- Sunset Berry: half strawberry, half red raspberry
- Bomb Pop: blueberry with red raspberry cold foam
- Strawberry Cow: strawberry with strawberry cold foam
Besides the set recipes, students can also create their own lemonade with up to three of any of the flavors offered. Cold foam can also be added onto any drink for an additional price, which is frothed heavy whipping cream
Pricing for the lemonades ranges from $2.50 to $5.75, depending on size, number of flavors and if there is cold foam or not. In my opinion, these are reasonably priced and can be comparable to their other drink options as well as drinks like them at other coffee shops.
I sampled all the flavors off the menu, then picked one to order. My favorite was the Sunset Berry, because the flavors of the strawberry and red raspberry mixed very well. I did like the Paradise Punch, as it reminded me of a Peach Ring gummy, and the Sunset Blush because of the red raspberry. The Strawberry Spark was good too, but sort of simple.
My least favorite was the Loperade, but I am not a big blueberry fan. If you do enjoy blueberry, I am certain you would like this flavor. The Midnight Cherry was OK, but toward the bottom of my list of ratings.
The cold foam on the Strawberry Cow, which is what I ordered, and Bomb Pop was a nice way to balance out the sour lemonade with a creamy, sweeter twist.
I had suggested that maybe a splash of heavy whipping cream or half and half could be good in the lemonades, so that there was a creamier texture throughout the whole drink instead of only in the cold foam on top.
I definitely recommend stopping by Brewed Awakening to try out this new launch. It would be a perfect mid-week pick-me-up as the weather warms up this spring.
