Students at UNK experienced a unique blend of comedy, psychology and live entertainment as professional hypnotist Marshal Manlove took the stage for an interactive campus event. Hosted by LPAC, the show provided students with a fun and engaging break from academic stress while encouraging campus involvement and connection.
Throughout the evening, Manlove invited volunteers from the audience to participate directly in the show, creating moments shaped by audience interaction and participation. Unlike traditional stage performances, the event relied on student volunteers, resulting in an unpredictable show that varied throughout the evening. The crowd observed as participating students responded to Manlove’s instructions during different segments and reacted to imaginative scenarios while on stage during the performance.
“We have had good turnouts with Marshal, so we thought we would bring him back,” said Caleb Sund, LPAC co-chair.
At the beginning of the performance, Manlove explained that hypnosis is often misunderstood. He described it as a state of “autopilot” and heightened suggestibility rather than mind control. Participants remained aware of their surroundings and could choose whether or not to follow suggestions. Much of the comedy came from volunteers embracing creativity and letting go of self-consciousness in front of a supportive audience.
Megan Sedlacek, a freshman social work major, volunteered to be on stage and experience hypnosis firsthand.
“I sat down, I remember being told to relax, and then I just felt like I woke up after, like taking a nap,” Sedlacek said.
Although she enjoyed the experience, Sedlacek said the memory gap surprised her.
“I would do it again, but I feel kinda sad I can’t remember anything about it, and I don’t really like that I can’t remember it,” Sedlacek said.
LPAC organizes events to foster a shared experience that encourages students to connect with one another outside the classroom. Events like this are encouraged to help build campus community by creating opportunities for students to relax, laugh and engage in a safe social environment.
“LPAC has given me a lot of opportunities to grow, along with inclusivity on campus, but also getting the tools to host great events for students and bring more of a sense of community,” Sund said.
The event was open to all UNK students with free admission with a student ID. Organizers emphasized that keeping events free helps ensure accessibility and encourages wider participation across campus.
Kody Tejral, a junior chemistry major involved with LPAC, said the organization provides opportunities to develop leadership skills through event planning and coordination while also focusing on creating engaging activities for students.
LPAC hosts events throughout the academic year, with meetings held weekly to plan future events and encourage student involvement. Sund encouraged students interested in joining to attend events and connect with members.
“Show up to our events, talk to some of us, and then show up to our events on Thursdays at 5 p.m., and we offer you to go straight into working with all these committees,” Sund said.
LPAC’s next campus event is scheduled for March 12 and will feature one of its most popular annual activities, “Stuff A Plush.”
