For the fourth year in a row, The Antelope won Best Overall Newspaper at the Northern Plains Collegiate Media Association’s Golden Leaf Awards. The Antelope received 36 awards in various categories to recognize the work of students.
Last year’s competition also earned 36 awards for UNK.
“There is a lot of talent in that newsroom,” said Rob Breeding, senior lecturer in journalism and faculty adviser of The Antelope. “We have been able to incorporate new staffers to keep that level of excellence high every year.”
The Golden Leaf Awards are hosted every year, allowing students to compete against different colleges. This includes categories such as Best Overall Design, Best Feature Photo and Best Editorial.
Alongside UNK, seven other colleges submitted entries.
The staff at The Antelope were not the only winners this year. Students in photography, video production and broadcasting also left with their respective awards.
Kelcie Osborn, a sophomore English language arts major, was grateful for winning Best Audio Public Service Announcement.
“When I got the text, I did not expect that at all,” Osborn said. “It shows you can learn something new, and working at it will pay off. I see radio broadcasting being part of my future.”
Along with the Best Overall Newspaper award, several students and staff of The Antelope were recognized for their hard work. Jenna Heinz, Josie McCormick, Sami LaMarre, Sixto Delgado Sandoval, Ally Sedlacek and Rachel Ostdiek were just a few of the staff who represented The Antelope.
Jenna Heinz, editor-in-chief of The Antelope, said she was proud of her fellow staff members for their continued hard work.
“It has been a goal to uphold that foundation the previous members of The Antelope created,” Heinz said. “We have been able to continue creating a high-quality newspaper that has value to our campus community.”
