A professor from the Department of Communication is going on “Cupcake Wars,” monitor screens are replacing the fountain and reality TV is coming to campus. With all of the media opportunities coming UNK’s way, the next step forward is clear.
UNK should add an “influencer” major.
Think about it – we’ve already had two success stories here at UNK. That “Cupcake Wars” professor got his start on TikTok (the real ones know about the spoon drop). His fame and bread-making skills got him on a hit television show. Louie the Loper has also taken advantage of the media for his photography skills. While disturbing, he did find a market. Calling his journey a “success” might be a stretch, though.
It only makes sense to add an influencer major – it’s a growing industry. It’s a must if UNK wants to stay with the times. No one wants to be late to the party.
Adding this major would help boost UNK’s enrollment and bring in more students. Few universities offer an influencer program, so being one of the first would make UNK an obvious choice for aspiring content creators.
An influencer major would have a lot to offer, even for students not necessarily hoping to hit it big on internet fame. Students can learn how to edit high-quality videos, create engaging content and attract an audience. Some obvious class options would be “INSTA-nt Influencer”, “Editing 4 Dummies” and “How to Sell Your Soul For A Profit.” What’s not to love?
Becoming an influencer often leads to bigger things as well. We all know at least three influencers who ended up becoming a singer or an actor. Taking advantage of the algorithm by creating fun content can lead to a student getting to pursue their talents.
While we’re at it, we may as well add a minor in reality TV. Influencing inevitably leads to a career in television. The two go hand in hand. Take a look at the D’Amelio family and Jake Paul. Both got their start on social media platforms and now have their own shows.
This minor could take a deeper dive into all things reality TV – auditioning for shows, filming for television and writing scripts (oh wait, we all know there are NOT scripts in reality shows).
All of the exciting (and definitely true) media news at UNK points to the need for an influencer major. We ask our fellow Lopers to join in support of this idea and help get this idea to the administration.
Oh, one more thing. Happy April Fools!
