Student Affairs held the 29th Annual UNK Student/Faculty/Staff Craft and Art Show in the Health and Sports Center on Nov. 14. This year’s event was more successful than it has ever been.
Kelsey Baxter, an art education major and library staff member, was selling handmade local photography prints at the show.
“It’s pretty neat,” Baxter said. “I love to see it grow more every year.”
Participants set up booths to show and sell their work. Every item was made by hand, a requirement for vendors at the event. A wide range of items were being shown this year including paintings, homemade jams and an independently developed video game.
When the Craft and Art Show started, there was only a small handful of participants, and it was held in the Nebraskan Student Union. This is the first year that the show was held in the Health and Sports Center. The location was changed because the number of vendors this year was much higher than before, requiring a larger venue.
Student organizations may use the show as an opportunity for fundraising as well.
Faculty and staff pay a $10 fee to participate in the event. Students may participate in the event for free, as the cost is covered by their student fees. Because most of the vendors are students, only about $50 is made every year. The money made from the vendors goes to the Union and is put back into events and activities on campus.
To become a participant in the show, an entry form is emailed to students, faculty and staff. After the form is submitted the vendor is given more information on what to do for the day of the event.
Lonna Weiss, retired administrative assistant of Student Affairs, organized the Craft and Art Show from its beginning until last year.
All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in the Craft and Art Show by Weiss as it continues to grow every year.
“We had a tremendous response this year,” Weiss said. “It’s good to see people being given the opportunity to show their talents”
