More than 40 students arrived at UNK this spring. According to the International Students Services, many more have applied and are waiting for their visa approval for the upcoming semester.

Pending travel visas are being approved all at once due to the international travel ban being lifted.

“We could not get our visa approved due to the pandemic and had to wait for two years in order to reapply,” said Rohan Shrestha, a UNK freshman. “We were immediately approved.”

There are currently more than 60 Nepalese students at UNK.

“We are trying to reach out to students who are planning to come to UNK, and provide all the necessary help,” said Sandesh Kapadyal, UNK freshman and current vice president of the Nepalese Student Assocation at Kearney. “We want more Nepalese students to come to UNK and help us build a strong community in Kearney.”

Kapadyal said that UNK has started providing Nepalese students with much needed financial assistance which is prompting more and more students to apply

“We have never had this many Nepalese population on campus,” said Anup Kathet, UNK graduate and former president of Nepalese Students Association at Kearney. “It is nice to see Nepalese community getting stronger in Kearney.”

NESAK is planning on conducting the annual Nepalese Festival, as well as weekly events to familiarize the community with Nepalese culture.

“With the increase in Nepalese Students, we are planning on conducting various events, allowing people to learn more about Nepal and the Nepalese community,” Kapadyal said.
