A new sorority is making its way onto campus soon. Sigma Psi Zeta is dedicated to sisterhood bonding and combatting violence against women.

Sigma Psi Zeta is the newest sorority looking to call UNK home. Although the sorority is not yet on campus, it is still looking for students who want to join the cause. SYZ is dedicated to women empowerment and philanthropy. The sorority is looking to make its mark on Kearney and UNK’s campus.

Breanna Marshall, Vice President of Expansion for Sigma Psi Zeta, said SYZ’s importance reaches far beyond academics.

“No matter where you are in life, mentally or physically, there will be a SYZter there to help you along the way.” Marshall said.

SYZ is partnered with the Obama-era campaign “It’s On Us,” to raise awareness and prevent sexual assault on college campuses across the country—one first and only sororities to partner with the campaign. While geared more towards people of color, SYZ is looking for any woman who believes they are strong enough to lead.

SYZ believes that their differences and diversity make the sorority a better and more accepting place.

“I believe Sigma will bring a community for those wanting to get more involved in Greek life on campus, whether it be through community service, philanthropic events, or creating a network for strong like-minded women.”

SYZ’s main focus is on philanthropy. Once on campus, the sorority hopes to establish safe spaces in their communities for anybody. SYZ intends on hosting events and fundraisers to help bring awareness about sexual assault and other types of violence that can happen on campus. SYZ hopes that these events can help members build leadership skills and empower the women in the sorority.

SYZ is looking for women who are willing to help out in their community as well as their sorority. There is no direct “mold” that members have to fill, since SYZ focuses on diversity, leading to stronger bonds within the sorority. The sorority wants members to feel like they are in a “home away from home” while taking part in community-building initiatives that also develop leadership skills.

Students are encouraged to join SYZ if they have what it takes. Hopeful members are encouraged to contact Breanna Marshall via email at

expansion@sigmapsizeta.org if they want to know more about the sorority or are thinking about joining.

Marshall is also looking forward to establishing a branch of SYZ on UNK’s campus.

“This is an opportunity for another sororal option on campus that wants to give back to students and we always encourage and act upon Greek Unity through collaboration and support.”

SYZ is already seeing students encouraged in participating and helping the sorority reach its goals of community togetherness. Students who are interested in SYZ or its cause are encouraged to contact Marshall. Until the sorority is fully established on campus, students can only wait and anticipate the new ideas and events SYZ will bring to UNK.
