The days spent relaxing at the pool, tubing at the lake and going to music festivals are no longer next weekend’s plans but rather a distant memory of our summer days. While it may be sad that summer break has ended, there’s still a lot to look forward to with the new school year.
Our staff returned to campus a few weeks ahead of classes so we could welcome students back with a new issue of The Antelope. We have returned to the newsroom in pursuit of doing what we love, and we are excited about what this next year will hold.
We’ve started to move back into our home in the Calvin T. Ryan Library as The Antelope newsroom was moved to University Residence South during the library’s renovations. Relocating to URS allowed us to continue producing a quality, award-winning newspaper, but we’re glad it was a temporary home. We will cherish our memories there but know we will make new ones.
As we bring our newsroom back to life, we anticipate engaging with students and being more visible to them. Being back in the library puts us closer to the center of campus and to fellow Lopers. The library’s open concept will allow students who are visiting to see The Antelope’s home and get more informed on what’s happening on campus.
For us, the start of a new school year means no longer seeing some of our newsroom’s familiar faces. Our staff adjusts with each school year, as we say goodbye to graduated members and welcome new ones to the team.
It also means new opportunities, new Lopers and new events to cover. Students are our priority, so The Antelope team works in hopes of keeping them in the know. We’re students too, and we are always open to hearing what our readers want to see from us.
Make the most of this school year, Lopers. While the adjustment from summer to a new semester can be challenging, there’s a lot to look forward to during your time at UNK. This weekend offers activities all day for students to get acclimated to being back on campus. The events allow incoming students to connect with each other and feel more at home on campus. The change can be intimidating and overwhelming, but there are many Lopers at UNK looking forward to welcoming new faces to campus. Take advantage of all the opportunities that are at your disposal and enjoy this chapter of life.
This first newspaper is just the start of what we hope to bring to campus this year.
We want to grow in our abilities and our value for our audience. If students are interested in getting involved with The Antelope or have suggestions for what they want to see from us, email us at antelopenews@unk.edu or visit our newsroom by taking a right when entering through the library’s west entrance.
Welcome back Lopers.
