Columbia Pictures celebrated its 100th anniversary with “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” and had me frozen to my seat. The story, the visuals and the character development made this movie a great addition to the franchise.
I’m a huge fan of the “Ghostbusters” franchise so when the latest installment was announced, I was more than excited. I grabbed my keys and headed to the theater to see what this movie was all about.
In “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”, two years after the events of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”, we follow the Spengler family as they take up the ghostbusting business, but it’s not all fun and games. Phoebe Spengler, granddaughter of Egon Spengler, wants nothing more than to bust ghosts and prove that she can handle herself in the field. But when she gets sidelined after a recent ghostbusting, she feels left out and takes matters into her own hands.
While watching, I saw all the effort the cast and crew put into the film and it shows in the final product. The ghosts were very entertaining to watch and the interactions between the characters made it even better.
When Stantz gets a new relic that turns out to be holding a god-like ghost inside, things take a turn for the supernatural. It’s up to the Spengler family to keep this ghost from getting out. Otherwise, it’s the start of another ice age.
Grooberson, Callie’s boyfriend, tries to be there for Phoebe even after the recent ghostbusting puts her on the sidelines. He has a lot of character growth, and it is shown in his relationship with Phoebe.
I do love the relationship that Callie has with Grooberson as they have great on-screen chemistry. Callie wants what’s best for Phoebe and Grooberson and is trying to be a dad to Phoebe even when she won’t admit she needs one.
Along the way, Phoebe meets a ghost named Melody and they become fast friends. This new friendship gives Phoebe someone to talk to and gives her an outlet to be herself around someone other than her family and the retired ghostbuster Stantz.
One of the things that I didn’t like was how short the film felt and how some of the scenes dragged out. The story had too much room to breathe and it suffered thanks to that.
Something I would have liked to see was the main ghost. It didn’t fully show up until the tail end of the film, and I think it would have been a little better if the big bad showed up sooner rather than later. What screen time the ghost did get made an impact on the story as it gave me goosebumps every time its unholy powers were mentioned.
Another thing I liked was the side plot of Trevor trying to catch Slimer in the attic. It was fun to watch, showing just how much of a glutton Slimer is even if it was just a side story.
Overall the movie was a great addition to the franchise with its story, character development and growth. I would recommend this movie to anyone who’s a fan of the supernatural. I would give this movie a four out of five Loper stars because while the story was good, areas like the scenes dragging out made it slightly hard to watch in some spots.
