Rob Breeding, a journalism professor at UNK, is set to appear in the newest season of “Cupcake Wars” as a contestant. The show, which previously ended after 11 seasons in 2018, is set to air its new reboot season this June.
Breeding said he was excited to finally share the news of his participation with the UNK community.
“I couldn’t say anything before, and I still can’t say much, but I can say I’m super excited for everyone to see my journey on the show,” Breeding said. “It will be cool for people at UNK to see a different side of me, the side that loves to bake crazy cupcakes.”
The newest season of “Cupcake Wars” will still be similar to its original premise, with a few slight changes. Contestants will still compete by baking differently themed cupcakes throughout the show.
However, instead of a winner being revealed at the end of each episode, the same cast will compete throughout the entire season, with one winner crowned at the end.
The cash prize will also increase from $10,000 to $100,000.
“I’m not going to say the money wasn’t part of the reason I applied, because it was a motivating factor,” Breeding said. “$100,000 is a lot of money. Think about how much quail hunting gear I could buy with that.”
While Breeding has worked in the field of journalism for 30 years, he said his passion for baking began long before that.
“If there’s one thing I love just as much as journalism, it’s cupcakes,” Breeding said. “I began baking as a teenager, and cupcakes quickly became my specialty. I have loved baking ever since, and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.”
Breeding applied for the show in December 2023, and filmed from June to August of last year.
Devin Smith, a junior majoring in journalism, said he was surprised to hear of Breeding’s participation.
“When he mentioned it in class I was pretty surprised,” Smith said. “I didn’t realize he was that good at baking cupcakes. I think it’s really cool. I mean, now we can say someone famous teaches at UNK.”
The UNK Department of Communication held a small lunch celebration last week to celebrate the news of his pending appearance.
“We wanted to surprise Rob with something small to recognize his success,” said Vivian Calloway, a professor within the Department of Communication. “We’re excited to see him represent UNK in a unique way.”
Breeding can’t share the results of the competition, but he is excited to see everyone’s reaction to the show.
Season 12 of “Cupcake Wars” will be released on June 12, and can be watched on streaming platforms such as Tubi and Hulu.
“I think people are really going to enjoy this reboot,” Breeding said. “Everyone should go give it a watch. You won’t regret it.”
