With the return of the sunshine and warm temperatures, the idea of soaking up some time outdoors sounds like the perfect escape from academic stress. The unbearable conditions from last week have us wanting to take full advantage of the favorable weather.
But our campus’ design gives students few opportunities to do so.
By revamping the green spaces, Lopers will be more inclined to make use of our campus’ outdoor scene.
As it stands, the campus green spaces mostly provide aesthetics. While it is nice to have a clean and beautiful campus, our team believes the spaces could serve a greater purpose.
The student government is making strides in doing this. The property where University Residence South used to sit was approved for the installation of sand volleyball courts later this spring. Making use of the space in this way encourages Lopers to get involved and make connections. Plus, it brings sand volleyball intramurals on campus and opens the door to new possibilities for UNK athletics.
Other green spaces should also be reimagined.
Small changes can make a big difference. Something as simple as adding more tables and seating across campus will promote outdoor studying and eating. Installing additional tables with umbrellas can offer shelter from the sun or rain, which will be more appealing to students.
There are some hammocks near the Nebraskan Student Union and Mantor Hall. Our team suggests hanging a few hammocks near the other residence halls so more Lopers can enjoy them.
At the start of the fall semester, the Office of Student and Family Transitions hosts Rec ‘Round Campus, inviting students to play yard games. Hosting more events like this is an easy way to reach students. For a more permanent option, we propose renting out yard games to students from the residence halls. This would give students easy access to making memories with their fellow Lopers.
Interactive art could also brighten up the spaces and add new ways for students to get engaged with campus life. Statues, water features and light sculptures would not only add visual appeal, but it would also be a way for the University to show support for the arts.
By bringing new life into the green spaces, our campus’ outdoor scene would become more vibrant, purposeful and useful for students. Revamping UNK’s outdoor space would help students get a breath of fresh air, create new relationships and take a break from crossing items off their extensive to-do lists.
Lopers, as the weather gets nicer, get creative in how you use our campus’ green space. While there are limited options, there are still ways to take advantage of what we do have.
