CBS started the new year off with a brand-new season of “Ghosts.” This sitcom will have viewers laughing their afterlife away.
I’ve been a huge fan of supernatural and sitcom shows for years, so when I watched the trailer for “Ghosts”, I had to know more. I booted up Paramount + and started watching the first three seasons.
Sam, a freelance writer, and Jay, a culinary chef, have their dreams of opening a bed and breakfast come true. Sam inherits an old estate from her great-aunt, but there’s just one problem: it’s haunted. After getting into an accident on the property that ghosts Trevor and Pete caused, Sam can now see and interact with all the ghosts on the property.
At first, the ghosts freak out that Sam can see them. This is the first time a living being could see and interact with them. Sam tries to deny that she can see them at first, but it doesn’t work. After convincing her husband that she isn’t crazy, Sam and Jay decide to stay in Woodstone Mansion to follow their dreams.
While watching the show, I learned more about the ghosts and how they ended up on the estate. I love the dynamic between the ghosts and Sam, as they bounce off each other with an addictive energy. This show, based on a British TV show of the same name, stands on its own as a way for audiences to explore the chaotic life of Sam, Jay and the ghosts of the Woodstone mansion.
The ghosts have this family dynamic with Hetty, the original owner of the house from the late 19th century, who wants to guide Sam to be the best person she can be. Hetty didn’t get the chance to pass on her knowledge so she wants to pass it on to Sam. I also love how Sam acts like a mom to the ghosts, as they can sometimes act like children with their antics. The story dives deep into how each of the ghosts died as the series progresses.
One of the things I didn’t like was how inconsistent the story felt. It drags on at certain points where the story is supposed to shine, but it takes a backseat just so the jokes can be center stage. This was semi-redeemed toward the end of season two where it ended on a cliffhanger.
Another thing I liked was the ghosts themselves, especially the relationship between Sam and Hetty. They act like a mother and daughter duo when they work together to solve a problem. I also liked the relationship between Pete and Trevor. They have a great friendship together and encourage each other to be the best they can be, even if they are the ones causing the problems for the others.
From its characters to its storytelling, this series is amazing. The team put a lot of love into the show. I recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of the British TV show of the same name or is a fan of supernatural shows and memorable characters. I give this series a four out of five Loper stars. While the characters and the story were great, the show slightly suffers from overused jokes.
