“Smile 2” sends chills down the spine. The plot twists and gore in the second “Smile” movie will make viewers want to sleep with one eye open.
“Smile 2” is a perfect scary movie to get into the Halloween spirit.
Warning spoilers ahead. Left on a cliffhanger with the ending of the first “Smile” movie, “Smile 2” picks up six days after the main character Rose dies. The trailer of “Smile 2” makes it evident that this storyline follows pop superstar Skye Riley.
I thought that this was a cool take on someone who is in the spotlight and being controlled by the entity. The entity is a parasitic spirit that feeds on the trauma of the host and causes psychological torture. In the first film, it was “regular” people who were possessed by this entity, so this was a new point of view.
After watching both “Smile” and “Smile 2,” the second movie was more gorey with better special effects and horrifying scenes. It is interesting to see in just a couple of years after the first one how much the special effects looked even more realistic. This is not a movie for people with a weak stomach.
My one complaint about this movie is certain jump scare scenes were predictable and took some of the surprise away. I would assume that most people going to watch “Smile 2” have seen the first one, which makes it a little more predictable knowing what the first movie was like.
Jump scares occurred many times in the first movie, so I expected it in the second one.
With that being said, this movie is still terrifying. A group of friends and I went to the movie theater to watch it and it did not get over until midnight. Having to walk outside into the dark and then into my empty home was a bit creepy.
Given the ending of “Smile 2” I could see the “Smile” movies becoming a franchise. The two movies are both very successful, giving the perfect opportunity to expand the “Smile” franchise.
My favorite part of the movie was the big plot twist. Her imagining what was happening for the majority of the movie was an insane plot twist. My friends and I were all in complete shock. This is one of the biggest plot twists that I have seen in a while.
I saw some theories online of why Skye Riley completely lost it before other people who had previously been taken over by the entity. One theory I saw and I think makes a lot of sense is she was already so broken. With her dealing with a bunch of issues already, it was easier for the entity to take control of her quickly.
The “Smile” movies are perfect for those looking to watch a scary movie. The jump scares, gore and psychosocial scares make these movies spine-chilling. After watching the film, it makes viewers want to do a double take and see if their being smiled at weirdly.
I would give “Smile 2” a screeching five out of five Loper Stars.
