The deconstruction of Conrad Hall has led to spirits roaming campus in search of a new home. Stella, the most stylish spirit on campus, first occupied room 318 in Conrad Hall.
The spirit roamed in a few surrounding rooms before the dorm building was destroyed.
“She’s named after one of the Alpha Omicron Pi founding sisters,” said Angie Smith, AOII alum who served as Conrad resident assistant. “The only rooms we saw paranormal activity in were 301-305 and 315-319. Students would report waking up and seeing her in bed next to them, hearing heavy furniture moving and water taps would just turn on randomly.”
Stella now has nowhere to occupy.
“I’m not sure what’s going to happen,” Smith said. “Stella would just roam between those couple rooms. Now that they’re gone I imagine she’s just going to move in somewhere else.”
Students have been noticing Stella around campus.
“I think I saw her in the library yesterday,” said Janice Flowers, a freshman at UNK. “I didn’t realize that UNK was haunted. She was just sitting on one of the couches on the second floor.”
Anna V. Jennings, the first librarian of the Calvin T. Ryan Library, haunts the second floor of the building. It’s rumored that Miss Jennings’ spirit recommended Stella to new locations on campus.
Stella is easy to spot. She carries a suitcase with her and rocks heart-shaped sunnies 24/7.
All of her belongings fit into one suitcase.
“When they started tearing down my home, I knew I didn’t have much time to book it out of there,” Stella said. “It’s about time I haunted around and checked out what they’ve been changing with all of this construction. I’m going to have a lot of options for my new residency.”
Stella is on the hunt for the hottest place to haunt on campus.
“I know that I want somewhere where a lot of students will be,” Stella said. “I want to know what college is like for this new age of Lopers. I’m sure a lot has changed since I first roamed these grounds.”
The spirit has been spotted in the Nebraskan Student Union, at the new fountain, Foster Field and in the Calvin T. Ryan Library.
