While the world faces uncertainty amidst the global coronavirus pandemic, students are facing another crisis— maintaining mental health. As the semester continues on, UNK is doing its best to help students in any way possible.
Students are stressed with classes during this time of social distancing.
“School work has become more difficult and it feels like professors have added more because they switched to online,” said Megan Coffin, a senior elementary education major. “I’ll spend eight hours watching videos for one class a week.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stress during this time can cause worries about health, changes in sleep or eating patterns, trouble sleeping and concentrating, worsening mental health and increased use of tobacco and other substances.
To counteract these symptoms, UNK has placed mental health as a priority. Student Health is now offering telehealth visits and counseling appointments online. These options are offered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the Counseling Center at 308-865-8248.
UNK has also promoted a number of ways to decrease stress individually. According to “Managing Fears, Stress, and Anxiety Around the Coronavirus,” finding credible sources can keep people up to date with accurate information. The World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and local health departments can provide more information. Decreasing media consumption regarding COVID-19 may also help to improve mental health.
Forming a consistent routine can also help students to stay consistent and improve mental health by forming good health and study habits.
