The arts are alive and well during the covid-19 pandemic as the one-acts start up. Despite a delay in mainstage productions, the directing class has no intention of slowing down.
“We’re really happy to bring theatre back,” said Lexi Powell, a senior theatre major. “It’s been a while since we’ve had any productions and I’m glad we get to direct them.”
There are currently four one-acts in the works.
First, “A Roz by Any Other Name” written by Brett Ryback, is set to be directed by Allyson Fricke. Next, “Deathtrap” by Ira Levin is directed by Rheann Rodenbur. Third, “I Hate Shakespeare!” written by Steph Deferie is directed by Lexi Powell. Finally, “If the Shoe Fits” written by Matt Thompson, Matt Chiorini and David Vermette, is directed by Stuart Wilke.
In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, several safety precautions will be in place.
“We are looking to do a lot of temperature checks throughout rehearsals to make it safe for everyone,” said Allyson Fricke, one of the student directors. “Audiences will have to wear masks and seats will be limited.”
Social distancing will also be in place. Not all safety precautions have been decided, but more will be in place for the performances.
The one-acts occur twice every semester as students enrolled in the theatre department’s play direction course complete their projects. Students in the class choose both a full-length play and a one-act to direct. The play is then cut into a 20 to 30-minute selection chosen by the student.
The students hold auditions and cast their one-acts. Auditions open to any student at UNK as well as community members.
“One-acts are a great way to interact with people you may not normally interact with,” Powell said. “I would definitely recommend for students to audition because of the experience. You get to meet a lot of interesting people and do something you’ve never done before. Plus, it’s a great introduction to college theatre. You might find something you love.”
Performances will take place March 10 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the studio theatre in the Fine Arts Building.
