As students face off against COVID-19 and classes, much still remains uncertain. A new mask mandate has been set and will change daily life for students and faculty alike.
Phases have been established by university employees to eliminate risk of contamination.
During Phases 1 and 2, masks must cover the mouth and nose in public spaces. According to UNK’s ‘Plan to Mitigate the Spread of Infectious Diseases,’ this includes “classrooms, offices where people work within 6 feet of each other, common areas, restrooms, elevators, and University-provided group or mass transit.”
During Phase three, masks “may be required in specific situations as indicated by supervisors, unit directors, and instructors.”
Phases are decided by the number of positive COVID-19 cases. If the number has flattened or declined based on the past two weeks, the next Phase will be implemented. If the cases rise, UNK will go back to the previous Phase.
Exceptions may be approved for cases where close contact is required and masks are not easily used. This includes athletics, music and theater. This also includes people in offices who are able to work more than 6 feet apart. For cases where masks cannot be worn, other protections will be put in place, such as social distancing or higher screening measures.
To ensure mask use UNK will be providing reusable face masks to students and employees. Signs will also be installed to promote mask use.
Whether or not the plan succeeds “depends almost entirely on individual compliance.” UNK students and faculty should familiarize themselves with the plan and abide by the policies.
