As the world faced some challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, schools had to make changes so students could still learn.
A solution was to do remote learning as it was flexible and not face-to-face.
Remote learning has advantages like allowing students to access their material anywhere, have a flexible schedule, pace themselves and take care of their other responsibilities. Also, students have different learning styles, so remote learning can help those who learn better virtually. Some online classes can be cost-effective since students save money from the commute.
Online classes have helped me manage my time. I have been better at doing homework, reading the material and looking ahead to see if any big projects are coming up.
Remote learning classes are a big responsibility because learning how to absorb information and manage time can be difficult.
Some strategies that I use include having a structured schedule and enhancing communication. Creating a structured schedule helps with managing time, allowing students to focus on the courses. Enhancing communication includes asking for help, checking in and staying connected with classmates and professors.
Some of the disadvantages of online courses are not fitting some students’ learning preferences, staying motivated, technology issues and limited social interactions. Staying motivated was a huge disadvantage when I first had online classes because procrastinating was my worst enemy. Plus, the isolation and disconnection from classmates make it harder for students like myself to stay engaged and motivated.
Remote learning requires a challenging level of self-discipline and time management skills. Adjusting to the process took a while, but by now managing my time and having a schedule my work has improved.
Remote learning is essentially a worldwide classroom. Virtual classrooms bring together students from different backgrounds, exposing students to more viewpoints.
It also offers various tools like recorded lectures and a lot of online discussions, which allow students to interact with each other.
These resources are available 24/7, allowing students to review material whenever they would like. This is another reason I prefer online classes; I can always Zoom and access my material whenever I want. Also, remote learning provides access to a wider range of courses that might not be offered locally.
Being able to juggle other responsibilities like work, family and school is what makes remote learning better than face-to-face. Learning how to handle time management, self-discipline and motivation can increase one’s skills when taking online classes.
Being able to go at my pace and try different methods of learning makes online learning more suited for me.
Remote learning is an inclusive and adaptable learning environment for college students. Ultimately, remote learning can prepare students for success.
