With increasing concerns about alcohol consumption among college students, Oksoberfest at the University at Kearney campus emerges as a signal of hope and education. This event is scheduled from 7-10:30 p.m Oct. 24 at the Cushing Fieldhouse.
“Oksoberfest is a free Halloween theme night promoting how to have a safe night because Halloween unfortunately can lead to high-risk drinking,” said Sally Wiarda, CARE team manager and wellbeing educator. “We know students are doing it, so how can we help them be safe?”
This event is designed for college students and provides a supportive environment for informed decision-making. Wiarda said there are activities for everyone like crafts, educational materials, candy, a pickleball tournament and a passport to encourage students to participate in each booth. Students get a stamp at each booth and can enter to win a pair of AirPods once their passports are filled out.
Oksoberfest provides booths where students can learn about safe drinking and decision-making in different scenarios. The event aims to create a supportive environment for college students to learn about the risks associated with excessive drinking and discover strategies for enjoying their college experience safely.
“Unfortunately, a lot of drunk driving happens on Halloween too,” Wiarda said. “So cops will attend the event so students can have unfiltered conversations with law enforcement, like hypothetically if a party gets busted, what is the best thing to do.”
Law enforcement will get to share their knowledge and experiences. Through discussions, students will get an opportunity to learn how to handle peer pressure and recognize the urgent signs of alcohol poisoning.
The UNK Police Department will be present at this event for any students who want resources or suggestions on how to drink safely. Matt Phillips, sergeant at UNKPD, said one program that can help students is Safe Walk.
“UNK Police Department cannot leave campus, but with the Safe Walk program we can walk students to their dorms and all students have to do is call us,” Phillips said.
The department also works closely with campus organizations to support events and activities. Oktoberfest aims to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol abuse and encourage students to make responsible choices. Students who will be attending can learn more about how to contact the UNKPD and Safe Walk.
There will also be a Halloween costume contest, prizes and free food available at Oksoberfest. This event is designed to show college students that they can have fun being sober, including on Halloween. Oksoberfest is meant to have a lasting impact on the campus culture, promoting a healthier and safer environment for all students.
