For the second straight year, the UNK Antelope participated in the Golden Leaf Awards hosted by Northern Plains Collegiate Media Association. The newspaper walked away with 23 awards, up from 17 in 2019.
The Antelope finished in first place in seven categories in 2019.
Several of these golds were awarded to the staff as a whole. These included “Best Overall Design”, “Best Multimedia News Story” for their coverage on Mental Health Awareness Week at UNK and Best Social Media Main Page for the paper’s Facebook Page.
Big thanks to Marcus Wagner and Owen Bridges who’s work on the Facebook page was the main reason in the paper winning this award.
Kosuke Yoshii took home first place for “Best General News Photo” for his homecoming photos from 2019. He also took second place in the same category for his photos of fan dancers from the Japanese Culture Festival at UNK and third in “Best Sports Feature Photo” for his volleyball portrait from 2019.
Editor in Chief Mackenzie Krumland won “Best Newspaper Front Page” for her Born to Play front cover featuring Madison and Anna Squiers of the UNK volleyball team. She played a pivotal part in the designing of the newspaper this year and was a main contributor in the paper succeeding like it did.
“Best Podcast” went to UNK alum Jack McLeay and Austin Jacobson for their coverage of signing day in the Spring of 2019. They also took second place with their UNK athletic director search podcast.
Alex Eller, Austin Jacobson, Ashlee Glaser, and Jiyoon Kim teamed up to win “Best Multimedia Sports Story”. The award-winning work revolved around the paper’s coverage of the football team winning their homecoming game against Northeastern State. The story was written by Eller, the video was made by Glaser, Jacobson was the host for the video, and Kim provided the photos for the piece.
In arguably the three biggest awards of “Best Social Media Presence”, “Best Overall Website”, and “Best Overall Newspaper” the Antelope came in second place.
“There were some categories that we were very strong in and some that we definitely need to work on for the coming year,” said newspaper faculty adviser Rob Breeding. “Overall, we are making strides as a newspaper and getting better each year which is all you can ask for.”
Big thanks go out to our editors Mackenzie Krumland, Grace McDonald, Mitchell Lierman, Owen Bridges, Marcus Wagner, Chase Harrison, and Alex Eller. Without your dedication to the paper, we couldn’t have accomplished all that we did this year.
Finally, thank you to our adviser Rob Breeding. Since taking over the newspaper in the fall of 2018, his constant guidance has helped the school paper do a near 180 in the quality and amount of coverage we offer.
We still aren’t satisfied and will continue to try and get better and better in the coming years.
