The UNK swimming team opened the 2025 season with a team-building retreat at Camp Comeca in Cozad, setting the tone for a year centered on growth, teamwork and bonding.
For coach Kyle Trelka, the retreat was about more than just swimming.
“Our purpose is bigger than swimming or diving” Trelka said. “It is to build young women who will be community changers.”
Senior captain Gabby Grace said the weekend helped establish the mindset the Lopers are carrying into the season.
“Last year, we broke the 200 free, 400 free and 800 free (records), so we want to re-break all of them,” Grace said. “Our theme is the herd before self. We’re working on putting selflessness first.”
The Lopers got their first test at the annual Blue/Gold intrasquad meet at the Kearney High Pool. The scrimmage gave swimmers a chance to see where they stand early in the season.
“It was a great way to kick off the season,” Trelka said. “It gave the captains a chance to lead their team.”
Last year, UNK finished seventh at the conference meet, leaving the team motivated to place higher this season.
“We’re working on putting the selflessness in our team goals,” Grace said. “We want to place fifth at conference this year.”
This season, UNK also benefits from a full coaching staff, something missing last year when Trelka led the program alone. Volunteer assistant coach Nicholas McDonald and diving coach Lauren Carlson now join him on deck.
“It has already allowed me to put more emphasis on team culture and building,” Trelka said. “They have taken a lot of administration energy and work off my plate and allows the athletes for a fresh perspective.”
Several returners are expected to anchor the team, including seniors Grace and Maggie Waddington. The freshman class is also expected to make waves.
“They bring energy and excitement,” Grace said. “It’s fun to see them push themselves, and it makes us older swimmers push harder, too.”
For Grace, this season carries personal meaning.
“I want to go all lifetime best in all my events,” she said. “I’m excited to graduate, and my sister’s swimming with me, so I’m excited to continue to build our relationship.”
UNK will hit the road next weekend for the Coaches Classic, set for Sept. 19–20 at Colorado State-Pueblo. The meet will serve as an early measuring stick, giving the Lopers a chance to test themselves against strong regional competition.
