Student government, like any organization at UNK, is a way for students to advocate for their peers on campus. Some may even argue that student government has a larger voice than other student-led organizations on campus because of its platform under the Student Engagement Office.
As another academic year wraps up, our staff agrees that student government was able to make many changes across campus with student life in mind.
While not all students keep up to date with current campus news, we believe those involved in student government deserve to be recognized for their accomplishments this year toward the betterment of UNK.
Student government exists so students can improve campus life for their peers, whether it’s on an academic or engagement level.
One highlight of student government’s year was hosting and running The Big Event, a day where various groups and organizations on campus give back to the community. Student government leaders also worked to get three sand volleyball courts added to campus.
The Student Organization Investment Fund was created this year, which funds Recognized Student Organizations $500 to get them started.
Student government has also shown it values students’ input by asking for their opinions on multiple issues. Student government leaders have done this through Qualtrics forms and by holding listening sessions about concerns over DEI changes.
Other accomplishments include meeting with Sodexo regarding concerns about the meals offered and creating a trolley system for international students at UNK.
Student government recently began sending out a newsletter on social media. We recognize that there will never be a way to reach the entire student body at once. However, we believe if bi-weekly updates were sent out, it would be easier for students to stay up to date with campus news, without constantly being overloaded with information.
Earlier this month, student government held its annual inauguration ceremony, introducing Sam Schroeder as the re-elected student body president and Paige Oltmans as the newly elected student body vice president.
Student senators in the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education and the College of Business and Technology were also inaugurated.
We look forward to seeing what student government is able to accomplish next year. We hope to see them continue to make changes influenced by the needs and interests of the student body. Being a part of campus organizations is a great way to create change on campus, and each student’s voice matters.
Lopers, as cheesy as it may sound, we can all play a part in being the change we want to see at UNK.
There are currently three vacancies in the Student Court, with the potential for more vacancies next year.
We encourage Lopers who are interested in making a difference to run for a spot or become involved in student government.
