Louie the Loper has been UNK’s beloved mascot for years. After almost a century of having the same mascot, UNK has finally decided that it is time for a change.

A new mascot is being debated upon. Some of the options include the Jackalopes, the Sandhill Cranes, the Archway Pioneers and the Blue Huskers.

“It is time we give Louie the Loper a rest,” said Dr. Philbur Jenga, dean of student affairs. “Louie has served us long enough and now students want a new mascot to represent UNK.”

Louie has been representing the school throughout multiple years and students may or may not be ready for the change.

“Louie represents us, we cannot let go of him so easily,” said UNK senior Jack Daniels.

Louie has been present in each major UNK event throughout the university’s history.

“How are we supposed to ‘throw our Lopes’ without Louie?” Daniels said. “Louie is part of UNK culture and anything else will not be accepted.”

The decision to change the mascot has gained both positive and negative response.

“Louie the Loper is not an accurate representation of the wonderful antelope animal,” said Ash Ketchum, a member of the UNK animal representation group. “It is about time we get rid of Louie and have a much more accurate mascot.”

Protests have started taking place outside the student affairs building with students challenging the decision to change the mascot. Signs such as “No Louie, No UNK” have been seen outside the building.

“We are not sure what the next mascot will be and we want input.” Jenga said.

Voting for the next mascot is said to start this fall.
