‘Life is a Dream’ is set to take the stage as UNK’s final mainstage performance of the year. Performances will take place April 21-24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Miriam Drake Theatre, as well as a matinee on the 25 at 2 p.m.

Written by Pedro Calderón de la Barca and adapted by Nilo Cruz, ‘Life is a Dream’ tells the story of family, betrayal and how one bad decision can lead to a life of constant misery.

This production will be directed by Billy Deardoff, a senior theatre major.

“How UNK works is they like to give students experiences they wouldn’t get in the real world,” Deardoff said. “At least one show per school year is directed by a student.”

Student director applicants must create a concept for the production, which theatre faculty then discuss. One director is chosen who will bring their concept to life on stage.

Deardoff was inspired by music.

Drawing insight from groups such as Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin, Deardoff has turned a play from the 17th century into a rock concert.

Actors wield microphones and guitars across the stage during larger-than-life fight scenes.

While students are overjoyed to be back on stage, there are a few tears left to be shed. Two members of the production will be graduating this May.

“As a senior who’s graduating in may I am very proud to be a part of this as my last show,” said Lexi Powell, a senior theatre major. “To be able to work with other actors again and have fun performing a show with others is amazing.”

Deardoff will also be taking his last bow.

“UNK has been one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had,” Deardoff said.

‘Life is a Dream’ is set to be one of UNK’s most exciting productions to date.

“Do you like movies?,” Deardoff said. “Do you like TV shows? Theatre isn’t dead. This could be the future. We can still provide something. You’re going to enjoy the show whether you like theatre or not.”
